Main Hoon Na (2004) completed 20 years on April 30 and one of the reasons why it was most memorable was the action by Shah Rukh Khan. The fight scenes were stylized and very novel for moviegoers at that time. It was action director Allan Amin, who choreographed the action in the Farah Khan-directorial and later on, he worked on many memorable films like Dhoom (2004), Dus (2004), Dhoom 2 (2006), etc. On Main Hoon Na’s 20th anniversary, Allan Amin spoke about his memories, experience and a lot more.
20 Years of Main Hoon Na EXCLUSIVE: Allan Amin says “Shah Rukh Khan was always sure about what he wanted”; also reveals “We put a motor in the cycle rickshaw so that it would go faster”
How did you come on board for Main Hoon Na?
Shah Rukh Khan had called me. Before that, I had worked with him in Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Dil Se (1998).
Main Hoon Na had new-age action and a year before, we had also seen a similar kind of action in Qayamat (2003), which also had action by you. You pioneered it in a way; is that right?
Yes. I introduced the idea of using cables while doing action in India. Mission Kashmir (2000) was the first film to have cable work. This was followed by Aks (2001) and then came Qayamat and Main Hoon Na.
Shah Rukh Khan had done action before, but he was seen in a new action avatar in Main Hoon Na. Tell us about the process…
He was always sure about what he wanted. Then I made it simpler and doable. Main Hoon Na was the first film in which we brought deep freeze…it was a 180-degree camerawork. It was used in the cycle rickshaw scene.
Was it your idea to use a cycle rickshaw in action scenes?
Yes, it was. We even put a motor in the cycle rickshaw so that it would go faster!
Was it difficult to shoot the scene where Shah Rukh Khan jumps from the cycle rickshaw?
Not at all. With cable, everything becomes easy (smiles).
Which was the most difficult scene in that film?
The most difficult one was the climax – Shah Rukh Khan running and the building exploding in the back. We had to time it well.
Did the blast actually take place?
We first made SRK run and then we conducted the explosion. In the post-production, both were merged. You can’t have an actor up there during an explosion.
Were there any injuries on the sets of Main Hoon Na?
There were none.
How was it working with director Farah Khan?
She thinks total masala! It was good fun collaborating with her.
What was the feedback that you received from the industry and moviegoers for your work in Main Hoon Na?
The feedback was tremendous. A lot of journalists came forward to interview me. They wanted to know how I did it, how it was possible to do it. Everyone was mesmerized by the action and wanted to find out more about it. Even the reviews were positive.
How important was Main Hoon Na for you and your career?
I became much bigger than what I was because I pulled off such major action sequences in the film. Hence, it turned out to be a boon for my career.
Shah Rukh Khan was recently seen doing action in Pathaan and Jawan. Your thoughts?
He did a good job in those films. But mostly, it was all special effects. In Main Hoon Na, he did action for real. We put him on cable, and we hung him from the helicopter. We made him do all those things. In Pathaan and Jawan, it’s all done against the green screen. Hence, the impact is not that much.
