Writer-director Anuraadha Tewari has written her new project, Dil Dosti Dilemma starring Anushka Sen as the leading lady, which will stream on Amazon Prime. Coming from the woman who has been a part of real-life inspired films like Fashion, Heroine, and Jail, the web-series is a light-hearted yet emotional take on the life of a teenager, whose life goes through a complete change because of a mistake. Speaking of the need to upgrade not just professionally but as a person too, Anuraadha Tewari stresses on helping herself keep connected with the current times.
Dil Dosti Dilemma writer Anuraadha Tewari asserts on the need to reinvent; says, “It is the only way to keep yourself relevant”
“I think the only way to keep yourself relevant is to reinvent—to upgrade. For that, it’s not just your writing and your craft. You have to keep upgrading as a person. That has been my endeavour for years. That is how I live my life. So for starters, I make sure that I learn something new every year. Like a student. (For the last 2 years, it’s been Hindustani classical music.) I also try to visit a new culture every year. To not just visit the country but engage with its civilization, its history, and its art. Lastly, I definitely keep trying to upgrade the craft. Through watching, through reading, through changing writing styles,” Anuraadha said.
She continued, “In 2011, I went and trained with screenwriting guru Robert McKee, in the middle of my career. It was exhilarating to be part of a class of 30 cinema students from across the world and emerge as a topper. So yeah, once you keep feeding your mind new things, creating new things, across genres and age groups becomes a lot easier. Your focus is then on the new thing you have to say, the rest is merely form.”
Elaborating on the changes she found in writing her new project as compared to Fashion, she shared, “Hopefully I have evolved as a person since then. I was boxed as a rom-com writer before that. I was writing all the light, fun, urban stuff. The genres opened up for me immediately after Fashion. The more serious work has started pouring in ever since. I finally became the writer with gravitas. It’s been 14 years since Fashion and I must have written nearly 35 projects ever since. There was Jail and Heroine as films. There was Seven, a fantasy drama for Yashraj. There were a whole lot of crime shows on TV. Then there was a spate of intense procedural dramas as Show Bibles for the Web.”
She also went on to add, “There was a lot of heavy research across exciting professions that took me to different parts of the country. To the point that I finally felt satisfied as a storyteller. I had expressed myself in all the genres I wanted to. So in many ways, my latest show, Dil, Dosti, Dilemma, soon to be aired on Amazon Prime, is life coming full circle. It is an urban rom-com meant for Gen Z. With this one, I am hoping I have reinvented myself for a new generation and brought gravitas to a genre that can otherwise be a bit lightweight”.
However, she also maintained that as a writer, she is not someone who keeps the audience’s age in mind while writing. “A writer does keep a sort of target audience in mind when creating something. There is certainly a change of tone when writing for specific age groups. Yet, a writer’s age and life stage will always reflect through their writing, no matter which age group they are writing for. The trick is in having something universally relevant in a story, no matter which age group or culture it is meant for,” Anuraadha concluded.
