Prime Minister Narendra Modi commenced a landmark two-day visit to Kuwait on December 21, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the Gulf nation in 43 years. This trip aims to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on trade, defense, and energy cooperation.
Upon arrival, Modi was received by Kuwait’s Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah. Discussions are expected to encompass a wide range of topics, including economic partnerships, security collaboration, and cultural exchanges.
Trade between India and Kuwait has seen significant growth, with bilateral trade reaching $13.8 billion in the 2022-2023 period, a 12.8% increase from the previous year. Kuwait supplies approximately 10–12% of India’s oil imports, underscoring the energy sector’s importance in their economic relationship. Both nations are exploring joint ventures in oil and gas, aiming to enhance energy security and economic ties.
Defense cooperation is another focal point of Modi’s visit. The two countries have engaged in naval collaborations, with Indian naval ships visiting Kuwait in recent years to bolster maritime security ties. Discussions during this visit are expected to further solidify defense relations, potentially leading to joint training exercises and increased military exchanges.
The Indian expatriate community in Kuwait, numbering around 640,000, plays a vital role in the country’s economy, contributing over $3 billion in remittances annually. Modi’s itinerary includes interactions with this community, acknowledging their contributions and addressing their concerns.
Cultural and educational exchanges are also on the agenda, with plans to sign agreements enhancing cooperation in these sectors. Such initiatives aim to foster people-to-people connections, strengthening the historical ties between the two nations.
This visit follows a series of high-level engagements, including the 2009 visit by then Vice President Hamid Ansari. It signifies a renewed commitment to deepening the multifaceted partnership between India and Kuwait, building on shared interests and mutual respect.
