Abhishek Banerjee’s portrayal of Jana in the hit horror-comedy film Stree earned him widespread acclaim. However, the actor recently revealed that the success of the film also led to a challenging period in his career.

Abhishek Banerjee Recalls Being Typecast Post Stree Success
In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Banerjee confessed that after Stree, he was typecast as a comedic actor. “After Jana, I was getting all these goofy characters. Everybody wanted me to wear some rangeela, chamkeela kapda and speak in a certain way. Jana was just a character and while I’m close to it, that’s not who I am in real life,” he shared.
Abhishek Banerjee ADMITS Being Depressed During COVID-19
The actor admitted that the pressure to continue playing similar roles led to a depressive episode during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I thought, ‘Shit, nobody is going to imagine anything more for me,'” Banerjee revealed. However, a turning point came with his role as Hathoda Tyagi in the critically acclaimed series Paatal Lok.
Banerjee expressed his gratitude to Sudeep Sharma, the creator of Paatal Lok, for recognizing his potential beyond comedic roles. “He imagined that by watching Stree, so full marks to him,” Banerjee said. The actor shared that Hathoda Tyagi was the character that truly “sealed the deal” for him in the industry.

Abhishek Banerjee further revealed that it has been a challenging journey to convince filmmakers of his versatility. “When I did Stolen, Anurag Kashyap called and said, ‘Yaar maine kabhi imagine nahi kiya tha ki tu ek rich Dilli wala lag sakta hai’. This is coming from one of the best minds out there,” Banerjee shared. He explained that his determination to break free from stereotypes and prove his acting range.
Coming back to Stree 2, the film is already a commercial success. It also stars Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, and Aparshakti Khurana.
