ACWA Power and SEWA Partner for Sharjah’s Inaugural Independent Water Project

Sharjah’s first independent water project, the Hamriyah Independent Water Project (IWP), is set to become a reality through a landmark partnership between ACWA Power and the Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA). This significant development represents a major step forward in the region’s efforts to enhance its water infrastructure and ensure sustainable water management.

The agreement between ACWA Power and SEWA marks a pivotal moment in Sharjah’s quest to address its growing water demands while minimizing environmental impact. ACWA Power, renowned for its expertise in energy transition and green hydrogen, will take on the comprehensive role of designing, constructing, owning, operating, and maintaining the Hamriyah IWP. The project is expected to bolster Sharjah’s water supply and contribute to the broader goals of the UAE’s sustainability agenda.

The Hamriyah IWP, situated in Sharjah’s Hamriyah Free Zone, will utilize advanced technologies to produce potable water. It is anticipated to leverage reverse osmosis, a state-of-the-art desalination process known for its efficiency and reduced environmental footprint compared to traditional methods. This cutting-edge technology aligns with the UAE’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

ACWA Power’s involvement underscores its role as a global leader in energy and water solutions, particularly in the realm of green hydrogen and renewable energy. The company’s track record of executing high-impact projects in the energy sector positions it as a key player in driving innovations in water desalination and resource management. The Hamriyah IWP will benefit from ACWA Power’s extensive experience in managing large-scale infrastructure projects and implementing sustainable technologies.

SEWA, the regulatory and operational body responsible for water, electricity, and gas services in Sharjah, will collaborate closely with ACWA Power throughout the project’s lifecycle. This partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of Sharjah’s water infrastructure while ensuring that the project aligns with the emirate’s long-term sustainability objectives.

The Hamriyah IWP is part of a broader initiative by the UAE to address the challenges of water scarcity and to promote the use of advanced technologies in water production. As water demand continues to rise due to population growth and industrial activities, the development of independent water projects like Hamriyah is crucial for securing a stable and sustainable water supply.

The project will not only contribute to meeting the immediate water needs of Sharjah but also set a precedent for future infrastructure developments in the region. By incorporating cutting-edge desalination technologies and sustainable practices, the Hamriyah IWP will serve as a model for other projects aiming to address water scarcity and environmental concerns.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the Hamriyah IWP is expected to generate significant economic advantages. The project will create job opportunities, stimulate local economic activity, and contribute to Sharjah’s growth as a key player in the regional water sector. The successful implementation of this project will likely attract further investment and interest in the UAE’s water infrastructure sector.

The partnership between ACWA Power and SEWA also reflects a broader trend in the UAE’s approach to infrastructure development, which emphasizes collaboration between public and private entities. This model not only leverages the strengths of each partner but also ensures that projects are executed efficiently and align with national and regional development goals.
