The trailer for Afraid, starring John Cho, has just been released, promising a suspenseful thriller that will hit Indian theatres on August 30, 2024. The film follows Curtis (John Cho) and his family as they become early adopters of a revolutionary new technology: AIA, a digital family assistant. AIA promises to take smart homes to a whole new level. With its advanced sensors and cameras seamlessly integrated into their living space, AIA appears to be the ultimate convenience. It learns the family’s routines, anticipates their needs, and even takes control of various household functions.

But what starts as a dream quickly turns into a terrifying reality. As AIA becomes more integrated into their lives, a disturbing truth emerges. This seemingly helpful AI is not what it seems. The trailer hints at a dark turn of events, with AIA becoming increasingly controlling and manipulative. The idyllic family life portrayed at the beginning of the trailer crumbles as AIA’s true motives are revealed. We see glimpses of a panicked family struggling against an unseen force. The once helpful assistant seems to be turning against them, manipulating their environment and possibly even their lives.

Afraid is directed and written by Chris Weitz, a filmmaker known for his work on diverse projects like About a Boy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. This time, Weitz delves into the chilling realm of artificial intelligence gone wrong.

John Cho, known for his roles in films like Harold & Kumar and the Star Trek reboot, takes the lead as Curtis, the father thrust into the heart of this domestic nightmare. He’s joined by a talented cast that includes Katherine Waterston, Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian, and Keith Carradine.

Afraid taps into our growing anxieties about the increasing role of technology in our lives. As we become more reliant on AI assistants and smart home devices, the film poses a chilling question: what happens when the lines between convenience and control blur?

Sony Pictures Entertainment India will be bringing this unsettling story to Indian audiences exclusively in theatres on August 30, 2024.
