The Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest and the India Entertainment Awards, held on October 3 at the Taj Lands End in Mumbai, brought together industry stalwarts and fresh talent, offering a vibrant platform for discourse on the evolving landscape of digital entertainment. This year’s festival features 17 thought-provoking sessions, each crafted to delve into the intricate dynamics of content creation, distribution, and audience engagement in our rapidly changing media environment. One of the standout discussions featured Rakul Preet Singh. Speaking candidly, Rakul shared her early experiences in the film world, recounting how she initially turned down an opportunity in a Kannada film.
Bollywood Hungama OTT India Fest 2024: Rakul Preet Singh only wanted to work in YRF, Dharma films at 18; bought her first car after signing Kannada film: “As a North Indian, I did not know how big the South industry was”
Reflecting on her mindset as a young aspiring actress, she stated, “At first, I had rejected the movie… I was a Delhi girl, 18 years old, and I thought I would work in films, but I wanted to do Hindi films only.” This desire stemmed from her ambition to associate with production houses like Dharma Productions and Yash Raj Films. “And I just want to do Dharma and Yash Raj Films kind of films. I was operating on that level. I was just out of school. That time as a North Indian, I did not know how big the South industry was,” she said.
Rakul’s perspective sheds light on the aspirations many newcomers hold, often fuelled by perceptions of prestige and success within the industry. “I was operating on that level,” she explained, emphasizing her naivety about the vastness and significance of the South Indian film industry at the time. It was only after the filmmakers reached out to her family, expressing their belief in her potential stardom, that she reconsidered the opportunity. “They told my dad that she will become a big star one day, and we want to be able to launch her,” she recalled, illustrating how external validation can play a pivotal role in an artist’s journey.
Rakul elaborated on how her perception changed, saying, “That’s only when they called my dad and told him that we have seen her date of birth and that she will become a big star.” This moment marked a significant turning point for her, prompting her to embrace a wider horizon within the film industry.
Reflecting on her early aspirations, she recalled, “I thought I would earn in lakhs… Amongst my friend circle, I will be the first one to buy a car.” This innocent ambition led her to achieve a milestone that many young individuals aspire to. “I bought a Ritz car from that,” she shared with a smile, recalling the pride she felt as the first in her college to own a vehicle.
