Brazilian Supreme Court Allows X to Resume Operations After $5 Million Fine

Brazil’s Supreme Court has lifted the suspension on X, formerly known as Twitter, allowing it to restore services for its 22 million users in the country. This development came after the company, under Elon Musk’s ownership, paid a $5 million fine for failing to comply with local regulations and court orders.

X was initially banned after it failed to appoint a legal representative in Brazil and refused to suppress accounts accused of spreading misinformation related to the 2022 presidential election. These accounts belonged to prominent figures associated with former President Jair Bolsonaro, who were disseminating false claims about election results. The company’s failure to act prompted Brazil’s Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, to impose the ban. Moraes, a central figure in Brazil’s judiciary, had been targeted by criticism from Musk, who labeled him a “dictator” and accused him of stifling free speech for political purposes.

The social media platform faced a significant setback, losing millions in advertising revenue over the course of its three-week suspension. With mounting financial losses, X eventually complied with the court’s demands, blocking the contested accounts and appointing a legal representative in the region. This compliance was followed by the payment of the fine, enabling the platform to resume operations.
