‘Chk Chk Boom’: Stray Kids ‘ATE’ it up and offer sonic feast with new EP – Album Review

1. MOUNTAINS
Mountains’ is a track where the members reflect on their past and prepare for their future. The lyrics, upon closer reflection, show the listeners the journey that Stray Kids took to come this far. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t smooth, but the group braved the odds to claim their rightful spot – “My spirit is high, my pride is unbreakable now  /I rule this place, nobody can handle me, hands off / Rising average, my steps are stomp, stomp / With a low stance and powerfully, I’ma go up.

2. CHK CHK BOOM
Stray Kids have always delivered banger title tracks with each comeback. But there is something about ‘Chk Chk Boom’ (apart from the Poolverine cameos) that just adds a tasteful touch. The members know which moves and tunes to throw around to catch their fans and listeners’ attention. The song is THE war song of assured success and immense confidence if there ever was one! The lyrics are brimming with a strong sense of self and high self-esteem – “I took a step closer/I’m the owner of my goal, lucky to have me as an owner/I make it right zeroing in clear.

3. JJAM
Watch yourself look differently at a jar of jam after listening to ‘Jjam’ by Stray Kids. While the members use PB&J imagery, they also employ smart wordplay on the word ‘Jam’. In Korean, ‘No Jjam’ means someone who is not fun to be around. If you focus on the entire lyricism in this track, it is an unabashed proclamation that Stray Kids are the most fun to be around –“Stick it up now, put your, put your hands up / It’s our playground, it’s getting crowded / It’s fun, it’s fun, catch up/Look at our jam, come on and dori-dori jam.

4. I LIKE IT
I Like It’ is a stunning B-side from this album. There is classic Stray Kids touch to it but also there is a touch of newness. The blend of hip-hop with dance is done well in this song. The trap and psychedelic-like beats meshed with dance beats create a captivating symphony. If you’re looking for a song about a ‘situationship’, then this one might just be it, with its crystal clear lyrics that go – “If you want to cross the line, go ahead, but I won’t/Because it’s bеtter this way / Let’s take thе pressure off each other and walk like this / There will be fewer scars this way.

 5. RUNNERS
Runners’ is a track sung entirely in English. There is an urgency in the song which is highlighted with a fast-paced chorus. The song expresses a desire to run to one’s loved one. Did you catch the Winter Soldier mention here? Smart of the group to mention one Marvel character in addition to having two appear in their music video.

6. TWILIGHT
Twilight’ is a heartbreak ballad through and through. Mellow tunes accentuate the vocal and rap verses as the members express regrets of losing a loved one – “Mistakes fostered by clumsy emotions/The feeling of love leaves behind a bitter resentment/Is there no pretty happy ending?/This self-talk endlessly hovers in the air.

7. STRAY KIDS
Stray Kids’ is a track by Stray Kids about Stray Kids. The song lyrics incorporate their past song titles and present their history crisply and concisely. The song serves as a good conclusion track for an album that is all about Stray Kids and their aura.

In the words of popular social media slang, Stray Kids ATE with this comeback. ATE is a game-changer. The group’s latest album is a sonic buffet, offering a diverse menu of sounds from alt-rock to trap. By actively participating in the songwriting and production process, Stray Kids have crafted an album that feels authentically theirs. The versatility showcased in ATE is a testament to their growth as artists. It’s an album that could easily introduce new listeners to the world of Stray Kids without compromising their signature sound. The only gripe? Some of the bangers are too short!
