June 2 marked a day of double celebrations in the Indian entertainment industry as music maestro Ilaiyaraaja and esteemed filmmaker Mani Ratnam celebrated their birthdays. Ilaiyaraaja turned 81, while Mani Ratnam celebrated his 68th birthday. The occasion saw heartfelt wishes from notable actors Kamal Haasan and Dhanush.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Dhanush revealed a striking new poster from his upcoming film, a biopic on Ilaiyaraaja. The poster features Dhanush, who will be portraying the legendary composer, standing on a stage before a large audience. With one hand on the harmonium, Dhanush captures the essence of Ilaiyaraaja’s commanding presence in the music world. The poster was simply captioned, “Happy Birthday, maestro,” with Dhanush adding, “Happy birthday to the one and only @ilaiyaraaja sir.”

Kamal Haasan also extended his wishes to X, sharing pictures with both Ilaiyaraaja and Mani Ratnam. His message reflected the deep bond he shares with the two icons: “Double happiness is a strange phrase in Tamil. Can happiness be measured? But today is like an example for me. This is a happy moment as today is the birthday of the elder brother among the three brothers and the birthday of the younger brother.” He added, “My beloved brother Ilayaraja will tell the story in music; Anbuth Thambi Maniratnam who adds a touch of charm to screen writing… I wish you both a happy birthday. May the legacy of our trio continue forever.” The post was accompanied by the hashtags #HappyBirthdayIlaiyaraaja and #HappyBirthdayManiRatnam.

The biopic on Ilaiyaraaja, in which Dhanush is set to step into the shoes of the music maestro, was officially announced in Chennai recently. The announcement event saw the presence of Kamal Haasan and acclaimed director Vetri Maaran. Helmed by director Arun Matheswaran and cinematographer Nirav Shah, the biopic’s music will be composed by Ilaiyaraaja himself. The film is a collaborative production by Connekkt Media, PK Prime Production, and Mercuri Movies.
