Veteran playback singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya, known for his soulful voice in Bollywood classics, recently made headlines for his remarks on actors’ contributions to music and his reaction to Dua Lipa’s performance in Mumbai. In an interview, he shared his candid thoughts about the industry, his iconic song ‘Woh Ladki Jo,’ and the mashup that brought it back into the limelight.

“Actors Sell Gutka, Not Classics”: Abhijeet’s Sharp Take
When asked if actors play a role in uplifting songs, Abhijeet Bhattacharya didn’t hold back. He stated, “Actors help in selling Hyundai cars, and spices, and that’s a fact. They even help in selling gutkha (chewing tobacco). But these people never sell classic things. There are only a few artists who sell classics. For example, when you think about Taj Mahal Tea, you are reminded of someone like Zakir Hussain, the tabla maestro.”
Dua Lipa’s Mashup Sparks Conversations
Dua Lipa, during her Mumbai concert, surprised fans by performing a mashup of her hit Levitating and Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s ‘Woh Ladki Jo’ from the 1999 film Baadshah. While the audience was thrilled, the mashup raised questions about giving proper credit to the original creators.
The mashup, crafted by DJ Ruchir Kulkarni, became an instant hit, but Abhijeet’s son, Jay Bhattacharya, expressed his disappointment over the lack of acknowledgment. Sharing his thoughts, Abhijeet revealed that his phone was flooded with messages after the concert. He even sent a message to Dua Lipa, expressing gratitude:
“Mere phone pe bhara hua hai jabse woh BKC mein programme chala, mujhe maloom hi nai tha. Bade bade celebrities phone kar rahe hai… phir maine ek thank you kiya Dua Lipa ko ki my classic meets masses.”
