EXCLUSIVE: G.V. Prakash Kumar reveals how the music of Thangalaan is ‘deep rooted in folk’ as he shares his experience of composing for the Chiyaan Vikram starrer; says, “With a combination of magic and fantasy, we have tried to tell the story”
GV Prakash discusses the ‘brief’ that was given to him for the film
“The description given to me for Thangalaan was that it’s about a tribe, and we are telling the authentic story of a tribe related to KGF (Kolar Gold Fields). The film presents the true story of gold mines and KGF and what happened in history,” G.V. Prakash Kumar told Bollywood Hungama. For the unversed, the film is inspired by the true events that transpired in this area of Karnataka. “With a combination of magic and fantasy, we have tried to tell the story of Thangalaan. The music of Thangalaan is tribal Indian and folk, yet it has an international touch attached to it,” he added.
Musician reveals the important role that Indian folk music played while composing
Well, it is quite visible that the album of this action-adventure drama is heavily inspired by elements of ancient Indian music and folk. Elaborating on the same, Prakash shared, “The music of Thangalaan is deeply rooted in folk, so the genre of music I designed for the film was inspired by all the tribal music of India. We, as a whole team, brought the original folk music back with an international touch to create the magic in the soundtrack of the drama.”
Prakash explains the difference between composing music for contemporary and periodic films
“To compose the music for periodic and historical dramas, you cannot use synthesised or sync sounds. You have to create a song with live, classical instruments. So we’ve tried to create that historical period thing since the story happened in the British period, so we brought all the live elements to it, so for that we avoided modern sounds, and that is the major aspect of handling periodic drama,” G.V. Prakash Kumar stated.
