Music composer Sandesh Shandilya, who is still known for his hit songs in films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Chameli, has come up with an album named Harvest. The one thing which makes the album stand apart is that its crew is full of newcomers.
EXCLUSIVE: K3G composer Sandesh Shandilya on working with newcomers in the album Harvest, “You might get future Sonu Nigam or Sunidhi Chauhan from these kids”
Speaking about the same, Shandilya told Bollywood Hungama exclusively, “Before this, I have always worked with experienced and senior artistes, be it movies or private albums. But this is the first time that we have worked with a lot of youngsters. They are not much experienced in this line of work. Barring 1-2 artistes, rest are fresh. And all of us are harvesting good vibes. We feel we are creating something from zero.”
When asked the reason for naming the album Harvest, he said, “Youngsters have a lot of innocence. They have a lot of questions. As they are not experienced, they are in search of things. So, we felt we are harvesting something. Our producer and the entire team felt that this name would be the best and I also liked it.” The album has nine songs, including ‘Naina Barse’, ‘Jheelon Pe Shaam’, ‘Nazar Mein Tu’, ‘Akhiyaan Nu’, etc.
Shandilya said that Harvest is a result of his quest to do something new. “An artiste always thinks of doing something new,” he said. “The same is the case with me. Like what new can I do now and how can I reach more and more people and entertain them through my art. Life becomes boring if it gets repetitive. While studying we realized about India’s roots and mitti ki khushboo, what more can we add. If you remove the land, the buildings will fall.”
He added, “If you listen to the tunes of our songs, you will get the feeling of Indian music and culture. But we have added other things in it. We have worked with hip-hop artistes and rappers.” Apart from Shandilya, the team of Harvest has five lyricists, nine music producers and 15 singers.
Shandilya doesn’t look at working with newcomers as a challenge. “I won’t say it was a challenge,” he said. “It’s our journey. We have purposely chosen this journey. We knew that we were working with people who are not quite experienced, and they will ask a lot of questions while working. But they had complete trust in us. They kept moving ahead with us and then we go this result. We knew that they would get the answer about something later, and this is what used to happen.”
He informed that in his team of Harvest, there are only 20% people who are experienced. For example, the well-known lyricist Irshad Kamil is also a part of their team. “We did this to have a mix and match of both. It’s like experience and innocence ka sangam. We are so inspired now that we will continue to do such experiments, and we will invite more youngsters from India and outside on this platform. We will continue working with youngsters. After Harvest, we are planning another album.”
While making an exclusive announcement, the composer said, “We have already started searching for new artistes for the next album. I am saying this for the first time through your medium.”
Shandilya is hopeful that new musical stars would emerge from his effort. “I feel you might get future Sonu Nigam or Sunidhi Chauhan from these kids; this is what I see in them,” he said.
There was an era where Indi pop music was at its peak and later it vanished. But Shandilya believes that that period is returning now. “That era has started again,” he said. “These days, Indi pop is doing better than film music. Earlier we used to do 10-20% Indi pop, now we are doing it 80% of the times. Sometimes, we have a song which doesn’t fit in any situation in films. That song also deserves to come out. That happens through private albums or songs.”
