Shekhar Suman has weighed in on the ongoing discussion surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The series, which premiered on Netflix a month ago, has garnered a mixed response, with some viewers praising its aesthetics and others criticizing its historical accuracy.
EXCLUSIVE: Shekhar Suman SLAMS “Stupid people” fussing over Heeramandi’s authenticity, historical accuracy, and chronology; says, “That’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s point of view, take it or leave it”
A Global Conversation
In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Suman acknowledged the show’s international reach. “People all over the world are talking about Heeramandi,” he stated, mentioning positive reactions from his friends in America and London.
Questioning Artistic Interpretation
Suman addressed the critiques, particularly those concerning historical accuracy. He defended Bhansali’s creative freedom, arguing, “Cinema should not be questioned. Interpretation should not be questioned.” He asserted that Bhansali’s established style is known for creating elaborate fictional worlds. “He’s a master craftsman,” Suman said. “He creates his own world and that’s cinema.”
Taking Inspiration, not Making a Documentary
Suman clarified that Heeramandi is not a historical documentary but rather a fictionalized take on a bygone era. “He’s just taken a cue from [Heeramandi] and made a beautiful series,” he explained. “This is the way he has imagined the characters to be and added his bit to it.”
A Touch of Patriotism
Suman concluded his remarks with a touch of patriotism, referring to criticism from Pakistan. “Some people from the neighboring country are feeling jealous…Why are you even discussing OUR Heeramandi? We don’t discuss your films,” he stated.
