According to a recent Vanity Fair interview, Deadpool’s integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) wasn’t always smooth sailing. The planned Deadpool 3 solo film faced creative roadblocks. Ryan Reynolds, along with director Shawn Levy, struggled to find a concept that could seamlessly blend Deadpool’s established comedic and R-rated tone with the MCU’s more family-friendly approach. Despite their efforts, they ultimately concluded that “it wasn’t the right moment” due to the lack of a compelling narrative.
Enter Hugh Jackman. Just before Reynolds was about to inform MCU head Kevin Feige about their decision to put Deadpool 3 on hold, Jackman contacted Reynolds with a brand-new concept: Deadpool & Wolverine. This eleventh-hour pitch completely altered the course of Deadpool’s MCU debut and ignited the current frenzy surrounding the film.
The news of Jackman’s return as Wolverine after his seemingly definitive exit in Logan (2017) sent shockwaves through the fandom. This, coupled with the promise of a Deadpool and Wolverine team-up, has generated an unprecedented level of buzz for the movie. Pre-sold tickets and trailer views have shattered records, positioning Deadpool & Wolverine as the MCU’s sole cinematic offering in 2024 with the potential to redeem a somewhat underwhelming year for superhero films.
Helmed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine will release in cinemas on July 26.
