Hollywood actor, Joseph Gordon Levitt, has showered praise on the Indian film industry, singling out Alia Bhatt’s critically acclaimed performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi as a major catalyst for his newfound appreciation. During a recent visit to Mumbai for the India Film Project (IFP) season 14 on October 12, Levitt expressed his admiration for the film and its portrayal of a powerful female protagonist, emphasizing how it inspired him to delve deeper into Indian cinema.

Levitt, known for his roles in films like The Dark Knight, 10 Things I Hate About You, 500 Days of Summer, and Inception, attended the IFP event where he engaged in a candid conversation with Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao. During their discussion, Levitt highlighted the unique blend of genres and storytelling techniques showcased in Gangubai Kathiawadi. He drew comparisons to the works of renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese, noting the film’s intense drama and cinematic grandeur. However, he also praised the film’s beautiful musical sequences, which he found to be both heartfelt and authentic.
He said, “Yes, it was different than really anything I’d seen, because it was this very heavy, distinguished drama that felt almost like a Scorsese movie at times. But then there are these gorgeous musical numbers that felt so sincere and well-rounded. And I found myself completely enamoured with this film. It made me want to learn more and more about Indian cinema, and its honestly part of why I wanted to come here, because I love what I’m feeling from the culture here. There’s such a big love of movies and artistry, and I want to come here and make a movie here.”
Alia Bhatt’s portrayal of Gangubai, a Gujarati woman forced into prostitution and her subsequent rise to become a powerful matriarch of Mumbai’s red-light district, garnered widespread acclaim. Her performance earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious National Award for Best Actress.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s visit to India coincided with the 14th season of the IFP, an event that brings together prominent figures from the Indian film industry. Joining him were actors and filmmakers such as Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Kabir Khan, Tapsee Pannu, Aditi Rao Hydari, Saurabh Shukla, Shoojit Sircar, Guneet Monga, Ram Madhvani, Kunal Kemmu, and Sharvari.
