A recent report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) positions Saudi Arabia as a frontrunner in the Gulf Cooperation Council’s (GCC) transition towards a clean energy future. The “Fostering Effective Energy Transition 2024” evaluated 120 countries based on their energy systems’ performance across four key dimensions:environmental sustainability, energy security, equity, and transition readiness.
Saudi Arabia secured the 58th position globally, boasting an Energy Transition Index (ETI) score of 55. 9. This achievement places them third amongst their GCC counterparts, following closely behind Qatar (50th) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) (52nd). The report commends the Kingdom’s significant strides in energy transition, highlighting an 11% improvement in its overall ETI score over the past decade.
This progress can be attributed in part to the ambitious Saudi Green Initiative, launched in 2021. This wide-ranging program aims to combat climate change and reduce the nation’s carbon footprint through large-scale investments in renewable energy sources. The initiative also establishes ambitious targets for planting ten billion trees and creating protected areas across the country.
The WEF report acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s strong performance in the “secure and equitable” dimensions of the index. The nation’s vast oil reserves ensure a stable and reliable energy supply, while its focus on social development promotes equitable access to energy resources.
However, the report also identifies areas for further improvement. Saudi Arabia’s “transition readiness” score currently lags behind its overall ranking. This metric assesses a country’s commitment to implementing policies and fostering innovation that will drive a smooth shift towards a sustainable energy future.
The report underscores the need for continued investment in renewable energy infrastructure and diversification of the energy mix. Additionally, fostering a culture of energy efficiency and promoting technological advancements will be crucial in propelling Saudi Arabia further along its energy transition journey.
