A groundbreaking trial in London is about to reshape how blood samples are transported between hospitals, using drones to streamline the process. The six-month project, a collaboration between the National Health Service (NHS), drone service provider Apian, and technology firm Wing, aims to improve medical logistics by reducing delivery times for blood samples. This initiative is set to begin within weeks at Guy’s Hospital and St. Thomas’ Hospital in central London.
The current system, which relies on vans navigating city traffic, takes over 30 minutes to transport blood samples to laboratories. Drones are expected to cut this time drastically, with delivery flights completed in under two minutes at a cruising speed of 100 km/h. This reduction in transit time could be especially beneficial for surgeries that involve patients with bleeding disorders, where rapid analysis of blood samples is critical for timely interventions.
