The Hema Committee report, which was revealed last month, has opened up a series of heinous crimes that have allegedly become rampant in the Malayalam film industry. Many actresses have decided to raise their voice in a new wave of MeToo movement where they have made some shocking accusations against some prominent names in the film industry of sexual assault, harassment, and rape. Amid them, Malayalam yesteryear actress Sowmya too has also come forward to speak up on the incidents she has experienced which not only includes rape but also about being a ‘sex slave’ to a filmmaker.

Actress Sowmya decided to reveal her identity but maintaining anonymity over the filmmaker who took advantage of her, she stated how he would start using her body once his wife was out of sight. In an interaction with NDTV, the actress recalled the incident saying, “One fine day, when his wife wasn’t around, this man, while calling me his daughter, kissed me. I completely froze. I was so desperate to tell my friends but couldn’t… I was ashamed, thinking I had done something wrong and that I was obligated to be nice to this man.”
She went on to elaborate on how it eventually led to her being sexually assaulted by him. “So, I continued going for practice, for dance rehearsals… every day I went back and gradually, step by step, this man completely used my body to his advantage. At some point he forced himself on me… so he raped me. This went on for close to a year while I was in college.” She also went on to explain that she would be dressed up as a ‘sex slave’ and continued, “It took 30 years for me to heal and recover from this sense of ‘shame’… I encourage survivors to report all such abuse”. Even though she hasn’t named the Tamil director, the actress has maintained that she would be reporting his name to the special investigation team which has been created by the Kerala government to probe into these cases.
Leading to the resignation of several actors from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists aka AMMA including that of President Mohanlal, the Hema Committee report as well as the sexual assault allegations that followed has led to some serious consequences including non-bailable charges with the reputations of many actors hanging by a thin thread.
