Microsoft Probes Microsoft 365 Service Disruption Affecting Teams, Outlook

Microsoft confirmed that it is investigating disruptions to its Microsoft 365 suite, primarily impacting Teams and Exchange services. The issue has drawn global attention, with users reporting difficulties in accessing key functionalities, including the Teams calendar and Exchange Online. Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages, logged a surge of complaints about these issues, suggesting widespread impact.

The company acknowledged the situation early Monday, notifying users through the social media platform X. It highlighted that the problem affects access to critical services, emphasizing efforts to diagnose and resolve the disruptions. While users globally have voiced concerns, the incident appears to have notably affected users in North America, according to initial reports.

Microsoft engineers began working on isolating the source of the outage through network trace logs and telemetry analysis. The disruptions are suspected to be related to a change made to Microsoft’s Wide Area Network (WAN), which temporarily impeded connectivity to Azure services. This configuration adjustment reportedly caused network latency and timeouts for users attempting to access Microsoft services, including Outlook and Power BI.

Service recovery efforts have included restoring the affected network pathways and augmenting infrastructure to mitigate impacts. Microsoft stated that the affected systems were stabilizing, though certain functions remained under review, particularly those linked to Exchange Online.

Outages of this nature underscore the challenges faced by cloud service providers in ensuring uninterrupted operations for their vast user bases. Microsoft, which boasts a leading position in enterprise-grade cloud services, has previously been lauded for its quick recovery mechanisms during service disruptions. However, this incident, coming close on the heels of another service interruption, has raised questions about the underlying resilience of its network configurations.

Organizations relying on Microsoft 365 services have expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding timelines for a full resolution. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s statement reassured users that further updates would be communicated via its service admin center, indicating a commitment to transparency throughout the recovery process.
