K-drama fans, rejoice! The classic trope of the bad boy falling for the sweet girl gets a fresh spin in the hilarious new rom-com, My Sweet Mobster. We’ve all seen our fair share of brooding anti-heroes who melt for the sunshine-and-rainbows heroine. But the true delight lies in watching these transformations unfold, especially when a gun-toting gangster is willing to trade weapons for cleaning supplies, all to win the heart of his lady love. My Sweet Mobster fills the void left by the recent scarcity of mobster rom-coms, and it does so with a bang (pun intended).

Han Sun Hwa stars as Go Eun Ha, a struggling yet passionate YouTuber. Despite her low viewership, she’s beloved for her wholesome children’s content. Enter Seo Ji Hwan, played by Uhm Tae Goo, a former gangster who’s undergone a major life change. Now, the CEO of a children’s food brand, Ji Hwan even employs reformed mobsters, giving them a chance to go straight. Here’s where the chaos (and the comedy) truly begins. Opposites attract in the most unexpected way as Eun Ha and Ji Hwan’s paths collide. Their contrasting worlds create a hilarious dynamic, and Ji Hwan’s determination to win over Eun Ha leads to some truly adorable moments.
My Sweet Mobster is based on the popular webtoon, “The Woman Who Plays” by Park Soo Jung, also known as Bangulmama. The series premiered on June 12, 2024, and promises a whirlwind romance filled with laughter, heartwarming moments, and perhaps even a few surprising twists.
So far, four episodes have aired but we are reviewing the first two episodes. Seo Ji Hwan is a former mob boss, who left his old life and transformed his ways. He starts a children’s food-producing company. But the reception of his company is not so good. He hires ex-convicts intending to transform their lives too. Since the company houses former convicts, the public has a negative view that a former convict cannot change his ways. They refrain from buying the products.
Despite this negativity, Seo Ji Hwan is hopeful that the consumers will see that people can change, and that ex-convicts can also change their ways once they are shown the right path. The drama also highlights the hypocrisy of the general audience that they want crimes to be reduced but they do not want to give ex-convicts a chance. These ex-convicts are mostly scamsters, gamblers, etc. who have served their time in prison and are now looking to change their former ways of living.
Eun Ha and Ji Hwan coincidentally run into each other a few times. Once it was Eun Ha accidentally injuring Ji Hwan in the ribs with a mop. Eun Ha profusely apologizes for this accident and Ji Hwan only grows curious about this kind-hearted woman. He begins to daydream about her and also watches all her videos on the internet. But his bubble is broken when he finds a video on her channel defaming his employees. He is, of course, angry at her, but he does not know the truth. Eun Ha comes around again with an apology and soon Ji Hwan also realizes his folly.
Then we have Kwon Yul as Jang Hyun Woo, a prosecutor. He has been after Seo Ji Hwan for quite some time but he is unable to catch Ji Hwan red-handed. He knows Eun Ha well and he keeps tabs on her as much as he can while maintaining a distance. There is some past between Eun Ha and Hyun Woo because we see that Eun Ha loses her sense of judgment the moment she sees the words ‘Hyun Woo’ anywhere. Hyun Woo might be her former crush whom she seeks him everywhere.
After two episodes, it is quite clear that Eun Ha and Ji Hwan will get closer as the story progresses. What is interesting here is Hyun Woo entering the mix. The three are connected but their connection is yet to be formalized in the story. It will surely be interesting to see Hyun Woo and Ji Hwan bicker over getting Eun Ha’s attention while Hyun Woo tries to nail Ji Hwan for his past criminal activities.
Coming to the overall narration of the story, the story flows quite well. There are certain elements of predictability but those do not take away from an enjoyable viewing experience. It is hard to forget one’s old habits and adapt to new ones. We see this with the mobsters in Ji Hwan’s company. They have chosen the less violent and noble path now but their former ways of pulling guns and threats at the slightest provocation make an appearance once in a while. Mobsters speaking their violent tongue but dressed in humble clothing are quite funny to see.
Each episode is an hour each, with a few minutes spilling over. There is ample space for the story to take shape. However, one might feel that this drama could have fared well even with twelve episodes considering how the story might run its course over the next few weeks. But knowing that there are sixteen episodes, it will be interesting to see how the makers make up for the extended run time with this drama. Will there be any more twists or new character additions to this tale of a former mob boss and a bubbly video content creator? We will only know when we see the next episode!
At the end of episode two, we saw that Eun Ha got into trouble after the milk brand she promoted caused severe stomach aches and illness in young children. She visits the hospital to see the children but the parents recognise her and accuse her of promoting the milk brand. One parent throws a can of milk at her but Ji Hwan comes to her rescue. He stands in front of her like a shield and takes the milk carton attack on himself.
He goes to Eun Ha because he is concerned about her welfare after this scandal. In the teaser for episode three, we see that Ji Hwan tries to take Eun Ha’s mind off the scandal by trying to make her laugh, spend time with her and cheer her up. He asks around his mobster circle and tries to understand how to cheer a woman up. We also see that Eun Ha is impressed and touched by Ji Hwan’s efforts. Something more than just a coincidental run-in has begun to brew between these two now.
So, if you’re looking for a K-drama that’s equal parts sweet and chaotic, with a healthy dose of mobster charm thrown in, My Sweet Mobster is the perfect guilty pleasure to add to your watchlist. Get ready to be swept away by the unlikely love story of a YouTuber and a reformed gangster – it’s a recipe for rom-com bliss!
