Filmmaker, Atlee has been enjoying win after win, with most of his projects becoming commercial successes and receiving love from critics and audiences alike. Recently, the director-producer made an appearance on The Great Indian Kapil Show as he is busy with promotions for his upcoming project, Baby John. However, a segment from the episode between Atlee and host, Kapil Sharma is going viral for all the wrong reasons.
Kapil asked Atlee a question that netizens believe was a subtle dig at the latter’s look. The host noted that Atlee was still quite young, but he had achieved remarkable heights as a producer-director. Kapil further asked Atlee:
“Kabhi aapke sath aisa hua hai ki aap kisi star se milne gaye ho first time aur usko laga hi na ho ki aap Atlee ho, usne kaha where is Atlee?”
Atlee’s respectful but profound response resonated with the studio audience, who broke out in applause and even won over the hearts of netizens. Atlee, who looked a little taken aback by the question, said:
“Sir, in a way I understood your question. I’ll try to answer. I am actually very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir because he produced my first film. He asked for the script, but he didn’t see how I am looking and whether I am capable of it or not, but he loved my narration. I think world should see that. By appearance we should not judge, by heart you should judge.”

Kapil Sharma’s question to Atlee left a bitter taste in the mouths of many netizens, who felt the host was subtly taking a dig at the director’s appearance. A clip of the moment was uploaded to X (formerly known as Twitter), and netizens took to the comments to share their opinions. One user wrote, “Kapil Sharma only body shames and has uncleji jokes. Not funny at all. The show has run its course and is such a drag now,” while another commented, “As if Kapil Sharma looks so handsome.”
However, other netizens defended Kapil Sharma, claiming that the question was asked in his signature humorous style with no ill intent. One netizen penned, “It was just the typical kapil sharma dialogue, he wasn’t insulting him at all!”. Another user wrote, “Kapil did not insult him. Kapil asks many people similar questions.”
Atlee on the work front
Atlee, who gained a firm foothold in the Hindi film industry with Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara, in 2023, is also set to release his next Bollywood venture. His upcoming film, Baby John, stars Varun Dhawan in the lead role and will hit theatres on December 25, 2024. Besides Varun, the film also features Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Jackie Shroff in key roles.
