Practices Hinduism, Flew Helicopters And More

Meet Sunita Williams' Husband, Michael Williams: Practices Hinduism, Flew Helicopters And More

Sunita Williams is an astronaut of Indian origin. Born in Ohio, she was a test pilot in the Navy. Later, she rose to the rank of captain before retiring and gradually joining NASA. On December 9, 2006, Sunita embarked on her first space mission, which ended on June 22, 2007. During her time aboard, she set a world record for completing four spacewalks, which took 29 hours and 17 minutes.

On the personal front, Sunita is married to Federal Marshal and former helicopter captain, Michael J. Williams. The duo has been married for more than two decades, but not much is known about Michaell on the public front. So, without further ado, let’s get to know Michael J. Williams.

Michael J. Williams and Sunita Williams’ love story

Before joining NASA, Sunita worked for the military and flew helicopters. There, she met Michael Williams, and the duo hit it off. They were initially friends, but soon, love blossomed between them, and they decided to tie the knot. Sunita and Williams had an intimate wedding, which was attended by their close friends and family.

Michael J. Williams’s professional front

Michael J. Williams is a federal marshal, a profession that may be unfamiliar to some. The Marshals Service, where Michael works, is the enforcement and security department of the United States Federal Judiciary. It’s important to note that it is an agency of the U.S., not a governing body. In his earlier days, Michael was a helicopter pilot, and it was during this time that he first met Sunita.

Michael, a practising Hindu, supports Sunita’s religious beliefs. In December 2006, Sunita demonstrated her dedication by taking a copy of the Bhagavad Gita to the International State Station in July 2012. She continued her commitment by taking a symbol Om and a copy of the  Upanishads. In September 2007, Williams visited the Sabarmati Ashram and her ancestral village of Jhulasan.

Michael J. Williams’ reaction to Sunita Williams stuck in space

Sunita Williams, on July 5, 2024, along with Butch Wilmore, went to space for an eight-day-long mission. But due to a technical glitch, the duo is, to date, stuck in space, and it’s been more than two months since they are in space. As per reports, the two astronauts will be in space for eight more months and are likely to return in February 2025.

Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore are losing bone density and are at risk of a brain haemorrhage. But the former’s husband, Michael, has not reacted to his wife being struck in space. Talking about Sunita’s fondness for the space, Michael added:

“That’s her happy place.”
