Sonakshi Sinha, star of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s recently released Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, has addressed criticism surrounding the show’s historical accuracy. While Heeramandi has garnered praise for its visual grandeur, some viewers have taken issue with its portrayal of a bygone era.
Sonakshi Sinha DEFENDS Heeramandi against historical inaccuracy criticism: “Sanjay Leela Bhansali is selling you the idea of a dream and a vision”
Sinha, who plays a central character in the show, refuted these claims in a recent interview. “When did we promise people a history lesson?” she questioned in a conversation with ETimes. She clarified, “These are the same people who will love Bridgerton. Yes, Heera Mandi is a place that exists in Lahore, but we never told you we were delving into history.”
Sonakshi explained that director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is renowned for his signature visual style, and Heeramandi is no exception. “Sanjay Leela Bhansali is an artist; he has created a world for you. It’s a fictionalized version of what was and view it as just entertainment. He’s selling you a dream; it’s what he’s known for.”
The 36-year-old actress further highlighted the apparent double standard. She pointed out that another Netflix series, Bridgerton, which also takes liberties with historical accuracy, enjoys widespread popularity. She argued for Heeramandi to be judged on its “entertainment value,” not its strict adherence to historical details.
For the unversed, Sonakshi’s comments come after a section of viewers from Pakistan criticised Heeramandi. In fact, Pakistani writer Umera Ahmed had also pointed out inaccuracy in the Netflix show. He revealed that his Urdu novel Pir-e-Kamil, which was published in 2004, features in the show which is set in the pre-independence era. Taking to Instagram, he wrote, “So #PireKamil was written before partition or is Time Travel real? Interesting.”
Despite the criticism, Heeramandi has proven to be a hit. It debuted at number two on Netflix’s weekly top 10 list for non-English language shows, surpassing several international titles. The series garnered 4.5 million views and accumulated 33 million viewership hours within its debut week.
