Tom Hanks praises Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha as “extraordinary”: “It was a glorious thing to behold”
Tom Hanks told Zoom, “I saw that Extraordinary. I think it’s a testament to how film grows on film. I think all of us have seen movies that have been incorporated into the rest of our creative process, sometimes bleakly, but sometimes very specifically.” The actor also spoke about films transcending borders and said, “Every now and again, there is a film that enters the worldwide consciousness that you cannot forget, that you cannot escape.”
Tom Hanks said about Aamir Khan’s film, “Look at the differences and yet look at the similarities despite the filmmakers and the cultures that they were in. In many ways, those films were saying the same thing but with the added prospect of the new perspective that came along with it.” He added, “I just, I think it’s to be celebrated. It was a glorious thing to behold.”
When Laal Singh Chaddha was released in August 2022, it struggled to resonate with audiences, earning around Rs 60 crore at the Indian box office. In a past interview, Aamir Khan’s former wife, Kiran Rao, shared that the film’s failure affected the entire family. “It did take a toll on us,” she told Indian Express, adding, “As a family, we were all around Aamir.” She also mentioned Aamir’s decision to take a break after the setback, as he wanted to spend more time with his family.
Kiran Rao explained that Aamir was the one who decided to step back, seeking to re-evaluate his work and life. She stated, “He was the one who took a step back. He wanted to re-examine his work and his life. For someone who was giving successes at the box office, and been relentlessly working for so long, I think it was the time that made him introspect,”
Released on August 11, 2022, Laal Singh Chaddha featured Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Mona Singh, and Naga Chaitanya in prominent roles. Directed by Advait Chandan, it was the official Hindi remake of Tom Hanks’ 1994 film Forrest Gump.
