In a candid conversation with Tanmay Bhat on his YouTube channel, Vicky Kaushal recalled the days when he was working on the film, Gangs of Wasseypur. He opened up about the time when he visited the coal mining area for capturing few visuals for a scene. He shared:

“The coal smuggling that was shown in the film was real. We shot it. One incident happened when we went to capture visuals of illegal sand mining. I was baffled because that was the first time I realised that this happens so openly that you wouldn’t feel that this is actual smuggling going on; you would feel that it is a properly run business because there weren’t just two trucks standing there, there were 500 trucks.”

In the same conversation, Vicky then explained what happened while they were shooting for the film. He mentioned that the condition had become such that he was almost beaten up by a crowd while capturing visuals of illegal sand mining for using them in the film. However, somehow, he and his cameraman managed to escape the situation. He added:

“We were shooting them secretly and some people came. There were 500 people surrounding us. So, the camera attendant was an old man, some 50 plus. That guy called the unit saying that the camera wouldn’t come on time because we were caught up in a situation here. Hearing him talk over the phone, the person there thought that he was calling somebody influential. That man slapped the cameraman, snatched the camera from him, and threatened us that they would break the camera. We both were about to get beaten up, but we somehow escaped.”

Vicky also revealed for one such scene in Banaras, he was almost on the verge of getting arrested for shooting at the city’s railway station. The actor also narrated one such incident when they were shooting at real-life locations with hidden cameras, and this technique put the film’s crew in jeopardy. Vicky stated:

“We had a camera in a van and we were shooting at the Banaras station. The shot was that Nawazuddin Siddiqui would come out of the station, sit in a cycle rickshaw and leave. Though we were shooting with a hidden camera, but we still demanded a proper single shot. While we were shooting that scene, we saw two constables looking into the camera and pointing at it, asking, ‘Who are you?’ At that point, I just told the guy to drive the van and run from the station because the police had seen us. This was how Gangs of Wasseypur was made.”
