Who is Shiv Nadar?
Born in 1945 in Moolaipozhi, Tamil Nadu, Shiv Nadar was raised in a middle-class family. He attended Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School and Kumbakonam’s Town Higher Secondary School. Before enrolling in PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore for his electronics engineering degree, Shiv studied at the American College in Madurai.
Shiv Nadar could not speak in English
Shiv Nadar completed his education in Tamil Nadu and did the majority of his studies in Tamil. As a result, he was not able to talk in English until the age of 21. After completing his graduation, Shiv began working for the Walchand Group’s Cooper Engineering Ltd in 1967.
Shiv Nadar founded HCL in a garage
With an investment of Rs. 1,87,000, Shiv Nadar founded Hindustan Computers Ltd. (now known as HCL Technologies) in his garage in Delhi with his friends. Initially, they focused on manufacturing calculators and microprocessors, but over time, he turned the IT hardware business into an IT firm. HCL earned Rs. 1 million in revenue in the 1980s and experienced its first success.
In July 2020, Shiv Nadar stepped down as chairman of HCL and handed over his position to his daughter, Roshni Nadar Malhotra. In 2021, he also stepped down from HCL’s managing director position and is currently the company’s strategic advisor.
